From 'Finntern' to fully fledged 'Finnster'

At 9am on Monday 23rd October 2017 my two week internship at Finn began.

As I got off the bus near Bridgewater Place the anticipation and nerves started to grow in equal measure, but I was excited to start. Excited to have been given a chance to prove myself somewhere and get some experience to help me in my search for a job in PR.

As I walked through the door I was greeted by the lovely Laura Hodge with a beaming smile and shown to where I’d be sitting. Before I had long enough to settle down we were called for the morning conference, where everyone working on PR accounts gathers around and chats about the news stories of the morning.

We went through the different publications, sharing stories that were relevant for clients and the nerves quickly started to retreat. I was here, I’d made it through the interview, I’d made it through my first conference and I was ready for my first day. And what a day it was.

You see, no two days at Finn will ever be the same, especially for an intern. Whether it’s working on a consumer account creating social media plans or executing research for a corporate project everything I was doing was feeding into the bigger picture. Being given the opportunity to try my hand at different things within the agency was invaluable and one that I will be eternally grateful to Finn for giving me.

After my first week, I had come to the conclusion that my skills were more suited to corporate PR. That didn’t matter though, I still worked as hard as I possibly could on all the accounts I was a part of because that’s agency life.

From the moment you walk upstairs at Finn and see the open plan layout of the office and hear the lively chatter from the team- you truly feel like a real Finnster, and it feels great. It’s what instilled a desire within me to belong here, to be a permanent part of Finn.

And so, at the end of my two-week internship when I had my review meeting I was absolutely thrilled to be given the news that my time at Finn would be extended. It wasn’t a confirmation of full time employment but it was a start and I couldn’t have been happier.

As Christmas drew nearer and nearer I wondered what my future would hold. Would I be asked to stay at Finn, or would I have to begin the search for somewhere new? I hoped with every fibre of my being that it wouldn’t be the latter. On the last Thursday before Xmas I was called into a meeting with Ian.
I anticipated the worst, expecting to be told that this was the end of my internship.

When he explained to me that Finn planned to take me on full time I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness flow through my body, and it didn’t stop there.

I would consider myself a people person and I have always had an interest in sales as well as PR. I don’t know how but Finn must have seen this in me (I had never told anyone) and I was offered a position within the sales and marketing team with a role in corporate PR as well. I truly felt that I had fallen on my feet and hit the jackpot. I had found a place where I belonged, a place where I could thrive and grow as well as a place that had nurtured me and realised my potential.

I couldn’t have asked for anymore from my time as a Finntern and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in a career in PR. If you’re looking for a place that is firmly rooted within the Northern scene, growing at a rate of knots and just generally filled with fantastic people and talent then look no further!
