    Our History

    Richard Rawlins, MD of Finn

‘Finn exists in many ways as a result of an unconventional career. I started my adult life as a tank commander … an unusual way to learn the art of strategy and leadership. A thwarted attempt to join the advertising industry led me to Cohn & Wolfe in London, working on the Stella Artois and Reebok accounts. Liaising with global agency partners taught me how PR should integrate strategically with all marketing disciplines.  At Consolidated Communications, an idea to streamline Disney’s press office through the application of web technology took me to a dot com start-up which exposed me to the commercial reality of the real world.

‘I learned that too many PR agencies focus on executional outputs and craft skills (coverage, column inches, followers) rather than achieving a measurable business outcome. At the same time, the traditional marketing agencies were struggling to understand a 360 degree world where consumers answer back, and don’t do what they’re told.

‘All of these experiences created a frustration, which I knew I could only solve by creating my own business.

‘I started Finn in 2005. The name came from my time in the army – Finn is a tank shell, which is highly accurate and makes a massive impact. Over the past 10 years we have grown to include in-house creative and content capabilities, a digital and insight team, and PR experts skilled in solving business problems.

‘We combine the insight, strategy and creativity of an ad agency, with the commercial rigour of a media agency and the technical capabilities of a digital agency. We are proud to be a PR agency: the art and science of reputation and the use of third party recommendation and influencer relations are our core skills.’
